During a tattoo session, ink is inserted into various depths within the deepest layer of skin- the dermis. To get the ink out during laser tattoo removal, high intensity lasers create light energy which is pulsed into the skin and absorbed by the ink. This creates a photoacoustic effect, heating and shattering the ink into tiny pieces, which the body’s lymphatic system flushes out.

Each laser treatment further breaks down the tattoo until it is completely gone.

In most cases, a tattoo can be completely removed without scarring.

The number of sessions recommended depends on how much ink is in your tattoo. Generally, more ink will require more sessions. The number of sessions also depends on how your skin reacts to the laser.

Tattoo Fading 

Minimum of 3 treatments are required and sessions must be spaced 4 – 8 weeks apart. Up to 6 treatments may be required for optimum results.

Tattoo Removal

Minimum of 6 treatments are required and sessions must be spaced 4 – 8 weeks apart. Up to 10 treatments may be required for optimum results.

Laser tattoo removal involves breaking up the tattoo ink into smaller particles. That’s what allows the skin to absorb the fragments of ink. It also allows your skin to heal from the process and get rid of the tattoo.

Since the ink gets broken up and absorbed by your skin, there’s no evidence of the tattoo left. Also, it’s very rare for patients to form scars after a procedure unless they already have an existing scar under their tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal can be uncomfortable. The discomfort of laser tattoo removal is often described as a “rubber band snapping the skin”.

If you are concerned about discomfort, local numbing agents such as topical anaesthetics can be used.

After your treatment, it is normal to experience white discolouration, red or swollen skin. This disappears over time, along with your tattoo.

Your nurse will provide you with information on what to expect, and aftercare procedures to minimise infection.
